A Tale of Two Cities will provide you with excitement, entertainment, and enlightenment for years to come.
A Tale of Two Cities was written by Charles Dickens and first published in 1859. The novel is set in the two cities of London and Paris before and during the French Revolution.
It details the plight of the French peasantry under the demoralization of the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and a number of unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period.
The novel tracks the lives of several lead characters during this period, including Charles Darnay, a former French aristocrat who falls victim to the wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Sydney Carton, a British barrister who attempts to redeem his ill-spent life out of love for Darnays wife, Lucie Manette.
When former aristocrat Charles Darnay learns that an old family servant needs his help, he abandons his safe haven in England and returns to Paris.
But once there, the Revolutionary authorities arrest him not for anything he has done, but for his rich familys crimes. Also in danger: his wife, Lucie, their young daughter, and her aged father, who have followed him across the Channel.
A Tale of Two Cities is truly a classic, being one of the most famous works of fiction ever printed.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel driven by historical circumstance and plot.
Dickens second historical novel, which he considered "the best story I have written," provides a highly-charged examination of human suffering and human sacrifice.
Private experience and public history paralleled one another as the political activities and personal responsibilities of these fictional characters, during the French Revolution, draw them into the Paris of the Terror.
It is perhaps best known for its opening lines, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair".
Dickens does a marvelous job of building the story one step at a time and slowly peeling back the layers one at a time.
The novel was first published in weekly installments. The first installment ran in the first issue of Dickens literary periodical All the Year Round appearing April 30, 1859; the thirty-first and final ran on November 25 of the same year.
It is a great tale of how love, revolution, and chaos can all fall into place at the same moment. A Tale of Two Cities is a book that stands out amongst the greatest literary pieces of all time.
